Orchard Turkey Burger

I had planned on sharing a recipe for thai turkey burgers today—with carrots, broccoli and a spicy peanut sauce.  But with everyone (including me) getting excited about fall recipes, when I spied this recipe, I knew I would be making these turkey burgers instead.  It’s probably for the best…I tried to make pad thai last night and it was a pretty sad failure, so apparently my thai cooking skills are lacking.

But THESE, These. Are. Good.  This was my first time cooking with ground turkey, and I like it!  The mild flavor of turkey means it takes on seasonings quite well.  It also feels lighter than a big beef burger.  The apples inside these patties keep them SO juicy! Plus, apples and cheese (and BACON) is a classic combination.  Throw some caramelized onions into the picture, and it’s a great fall feast.

Start by caramelizing the onions.  This takes about 20 minutes, so you want to get them on the stove over low heat right away with olive oil and salt.  Caramelized onions are amazing.  They are sweet and savory, and are pretty much great in any dish.

Then translucent and slightly brown.  At this point, sprinkle the sugar over them to really start the caramelizing:

Meanwhile, make your burgers!

Grate up two small green apples, and get your spices–onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and thyme

I will say, these pack a big thyme flavor, so if you’re not as into that, go easy…were I to make these again, I would use a bit less.

Combine seasonings, grated apples, and your turkey meat.  I used a spoon to mix this together.  You want it well combined, but you don’t want to pack your meat too much or the patties will be dense.  Then, divide into four patties and get that skillet hot over medium heat.

4-5 minutes per side.

I put some mozzarella cheese on the patties with two minutes to go, and then covered.  This steams the burgers, which helps them cook if they’re not quite done, and will melt your cheese.

And that’s all, folks!

 

Serve with caramelized onions, and bacon with sweet potato fries (these are from frozen, but eventually I’ll post on how to bake some pretty good ones homemade)!

Orchard Turkey Burgers

From Iowa Girl Eats

Makes 4 burgers

1 large yellow onion

1 tsp sugar

salt

1 lb. ground turkey (I used 7% fat)

2 small granny smith apples, or 1 large one shredded (~ ½ cup)

1 tsp salt

¼ tsp onion powder

¼ tsp garlic powder

½ tsp thyme

Your favorite white cheese

  • Slice up onion, and sautee over low heat with a generous sprinkling of salt and a tsp of sugar for about 20 minutes until soft and golden brown
  • Meanwhile, grate your apples and combine with the ground turkey and seasonings; divide into four patties
  • Cook each patty for 4-5 minutes per side…add cheese on top and cover for the last 1-2 minutes of cooking.

Serve each patty with caramelized onions and bacon!
